suspect claims memory loss 7/11.71
Suspect Claims Memory Lack SAN JUIS OBISPO (UPI) Joseph D. Tregeagle testified Friday that he believes he killed Ronald Payton but can no longer remember the killing. "I must have done it, but I no longer remember it," Tregeagle said, taking the stand in his trial for Payton's murder. Payton, 17, was stabbed in the chest and his throat slashed Jan. 7. Tregeagle, 23, originally from Provo, Utah, is being tried before Superior Court Judge William P. Clark Jr. without a jury. Tregeagle testified that he wanted Payton to join him in a plan to rob the mail truck that Tregeagle drove between San Luis Obispo and Oakland, and make it look like a hijacking. He said that on the night of the killing, they were looking for a place to abandon the truck if they went through with the scheme, and wound up in Montana de Oro State Park. Tregeagle said they then got into an argument and "the next thing I remember was taking his body out of my car." He said he did not remember the killing, but later noticied blood under his fingernails, and blood on his pocket knife, and when he read newspaper stories of Payton's murder "then I knew I must have done it." The trial resumes Monday.
