ALTON EVENING TELEGRAPH At Alton Board Approves Application For Package Liquor License EAST ALTON - Two appoint- merits, the issuing of a package liquor permit and calling for bids for garbage and trash pick up and disposal were the main items of business for the councilmen v here Tuesday night. Marry Leroy Keuhnel, a former •member of the street department who early this week was appointed temporary water commissioner, was appointed water commissioner by Mayor Charles Vanpreter and the councilmen approved the appointment. "C. H. Sheppard of Alton was appointed city engineer. Mayor Vanpreter reported he had received no word from the police and recreation commissions hut that he felt there are some appointments to be made to these two commissions. "I presume that I will have to ask them. I understand among themselves there have been some resignations' 1 , the mayor told the councilmen. An application for a package ; liquor license from Truman Vro- i man as a representative of the Kroeger Co. was approved. Vroman is * manager of the Kroger Grocery Store on St. Louis Ave., and told the councilmen that his firm plans to sell wine and beer. A portion of a theater located next door may be taken in by the super market, he told the councilmen. The village allows one packaged liquor store and as William Vineyard did not re-apply for his permit, the councilmen okayed Vroman's request. Upon motion of Lorell Hicks, bids will be taken on the collection and disposal of garbage and trash for i the village. Bids must be in the hands of the village clerk by noon June 1 and the bids will be opened at 7:30 p. m. June 1. A person can bid on either garbage or trash collection or both. A leak proof bed must be provided for the truck hauling the garbage. Mayo* Vanpreter said he may call a special council meeting early next week to give the councilmen a full report on the proposed disposition of* the Defense Housing Area which he, has been promised by the Housing Authority. He also hopes that the city engineer can be present so that the road program can be discussed. Some discussion for the evening centered around who Is to pay for the erection o! curb and gutter on a portion of Shamrock and Silver St. as Mayor Vanpreter said he could not find the proper data on the project. A poppy day proclamation was issued by Mayor Vanpreter following a letter from the American Legion. A letter was also received from the Woman's Club thanking the village for its cooperation in the clean-up campaign. Bonds for William Keil, villlage treasurer, and Francis Manning, village attorney, were approved. Rosewood Auxiliary Plans Card Party Saturday ROSEWOOD HEIGHTS — Plans for a pivot card party for the pubic to be held Saturday at 8 p. m. we,re completed Tuesday night when 16 members of the Firemen's Auxiliary met at the Fire House. The hand-made quilt which the auxiliary Is going to give away will be awarded at the close of the evening.
