FAMED DIRECTOR iTOMAKEFILM IN HOLLYWOOD Agrees to U. S. Only After Invasion By Germany HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 7 (AP) -Rene Glair, famous French motion picture director, started filming first American movie today. ^ Producer Joe Pasternak intro- o.'duced him to the press at a cock~ ' tail party last night, Clair is to a large film audience in this country for such of his films as "Le Million," which made Anabella a star, "14 Juillet," "A Nous la Liberte," "Rooftops of Paris" and "The Ghost Goes West," made in England with Robert Donat as star. Clair started work loday on Flame of New Orleans," with Marlene Dietrich, Bruce Cabot, Mischa Auer, Andy Dcvine and Franklin Pangborn. Although he has been signed for only Ihe one film, Universal Universal studio .said he probably would remain for others, including, including, possibly, one starring the French actress, Danielle Darrieux, who had a brief try at Hollywood several years ago. The s t u d i o said attempts been made for 10 years to induce .e Clair to come to Hollywood, but that only the German invasion cau.sed him to leave. Clair said he was especially happy to be making a picture a New Orleans--and hence a strong- French--background j'or his first effort. Although the cast was strange to h i m , he has two associates on his technical staff. "I can not tell what this will become." he shrugged. "I can only try to make a good picture."
