MICHAEL W.FERRE Ferre Runs For Office Of Sheriff Michael W. Ferre, 32, of Pleasant Grove, today announced he is seeking Democratic nomination as Utah County Sheriff. ,He is currently serving as chief of the Pleasant Grove Police Department, a position he has held since 1968. In making the announcement, Chief Ferre commented that law enforcement must become more responsive to the needs and problems of the youth. "Statistics indicate that juveniles are committing a major portion of the serious crime in Utah County," he said. "The sheriff's office must make every effort to participate activiely with other agencies and organizations to approach juvenile problems with maximum agencies and the entire community if a lasting effect on these problems is to be achieved," he added. Need System Mr. Ferre also feels that for too long, law enforcement in Utah County has "compensated for the various deficiencies on a daily basis. "A dramatic reduction of crime will not result from unsystematic police actions taken against isolated problems," he continued. "The only way to bring about an overall reduction in crime is to attack the crime problem systematically." He stated that basic objectives designed to improve police service and reduce crime must be established.
