! DEATH OF FORMER COUNTY CLERK G. Canning Smith, a resident of Mendocino city for over 50 years, died at the Masonic home at Decoto last week at the ripe old age of 79 years. Mr. Smith was a native of Massachusetts, and came to California California in '49 via Cape Horn. He came to Mendocino in 1854, and was elected elected justice of the peace next year, holding the position for many years. At one time he had a pony express from Mendocino to Cloverdale. He was elected county'cleik in 1859 and also acted as /deputy recorder and auditor. In 1866 he \teut on an expedition expedition to Mexico, but contfticted I fever «ud returned to Memdociuo | where he made his home until a few I ! years ago. He was one of the organizers organizers of the Masonic lodge at Mendocino, Mendocino, and his death removes all but one of the charter members. He was known throughout the county and was hold in high esteem. Memorial Services Memorial services will be held at tbe Christian (Dhurch uemt Sunday at 11 o'clock. Rev. Otha Wilkisou will deliver the addrnss. The Blue and the Gray and all others are cordially cordially invited to attend these services services and also the usual services on May 30th.
