Oct. 12, 1868: Marshall Field's — Field, Leiter & Co. — opens a six story store at Washington and State streets. The more than three column story featured an in-depth explanation of the various departments' offerings. The building would burn down during the Great Chicago Fire in 1871 and would be rebuilt on the same spot.
