WEST/LAKE'S TKIAL. Defense Attempts to Impeach Prose - ,. cation's Witnesses. The defense ic the Westlake murder (rial started in Monday morning to areak the testimony of Mrs, B. 8. Onnn and Mrs. Tony. Lovdftl, who testified that Westlake showed them Watts' iewelry on the Yolo bridge, between t and 9 o'clock on the,morning of Febru< ary 23d, meeting them when they were coming into town. Mrs. Lain Voulkee, tioasekeeper, and H. W. Woods, proprietor proprietor of the Bailey House, were pnt on the stand to testify that on that morn' ing they were at the Bailey House and did not leave their room. It was testified testified to that Mrs. Qnnn and Mra. Ray mond were at the hrmee on the- night o the 22d, and o'clock they, that with between 8 and 9 Mra. Lovdal ant Weetlake, were in the room when thi housekeeper went in to make up the bed. MIB. Raymond, Mrs. Lovdal an Mra. Guna went out to the Lovda ranch on the .23d and retnrned on tbi 24th. Crose-exiimination failed to shaki this testimony to any dexree. No mom orandntn had been kept, bat the wit nesses were positive of their statement because they had just taken possession o! the honse and these were the firs people to whom they had rented rooms The defense rested at this point. 0. A, (Tony) Lovdal was^the Brst wit ocas in rebuttal. He was asked If he knew where Mrs, Gunn end Mrs. Ray mond were on the night of February 22d. The question w«a objected to on the ground that it was'not in rebutta of any new matter. There h«d been simple contradiction, bat no new mat ter had been brought ont, The conr sustained the objection. An adjourn ment was then taken.—Bee.
