City's Steel Pier. ! And on Saturday afternoon, asj a special attraction for youngsters Elwood and Elwood will give their famous Punch and Judy show. Two Huge Stages To permit everyone to hear and see the entertainment acts, the committee is erecting two ele vated, flood - lighted stages one at each end of the midway and is equipping each with amplifying systems. Of course, one of the principal attractions of the fair will be the exhibits of products from farm, garden and orchard in the Millersburg Millersburg area. There will be a fanciers' poultry and pigeon show, and when entries entries for this division of the fair closed last Saturday, more than 500 exhibits were assured. There will be a flower show on two days of the fair Friday and Saturday. Another feature will be the hobby exhibit. Scores of exhibits have been submitted for display in store windows on Market street. The exhibits will be judged and cash awards will be given. Housewives will have their own branch of competition, in the section section devoted to fancy work, home arts and canned and baked goods. The fair "grounds" are fast assuming assuming color. Colored banners have been suspended above the street. Long myriads of electric lights have been strung along the midway. Weeks of whole - hearted effort in which everyone here has cooperated, cooperated, are nearing their climax, and there is an air of proud expectancy expectancy everywhere. The host to Central Pennsyl - mania in this Farmers' Fair is - a borough with a population of about 3300. Bordering areas, commonly thought of as Millers burg, although not actually a part ot it, boost that figure to 4000. It was named for its founder. Daniel Miller, who with his bro ther, John, came from Lancaster county to the Lykens Valley in 1790. In 1807 Daniel Miller laid out the town. In 1849 it was incorporated incorporated as a borough. When Daniel and John Miller came here in 1790, they patented 400 acres of land at the mouth of the Wiconisco creek, extending north and eastward land that is now part of the town. The Millers were not the first to hew their homes out of the forests, forests, here, however. There were already some French Huguenot and German settlers here, and Francis Jaques, or Jacobs, had built a log cabin and grist mill about 100 yards southeast of the foot of present Race street. Town is Started This cabin served as a fort to which settlers fled during Indian attacks, and it was in this cabin that Daniel Miller launched the first school, with himself as teacher. In 1807 Daniel Miller's dream for the creation of a town crystal - ized, and he began laying out the town, thoughtfully providing sites for a church, school and publii? square as his gift. The original town, plotted and surveyed by Peter Williamson, surveyor, included 200 lots front ing 66 feet and 165 feet deep with the exception of those on the north side of Center, Moore and North streets, which are only 155 feet deep. In July of the same year Miller Miller held a public drawing, the number of each lot being duplicated duplicated on one qf the 200 tickets for which the purchasers drew. The lots sold at $33.33 each. The house in which Daniel Miller Miller lived for many years is still standing. By 1813 a school had been erected, principally through the efforts of Daniel Miller. Miller died in October, 1828, and is buried in beautiful Oak Hill Cemetery at the edge of the borough. The lumber business, made possible possible through logging operations on the river, helped the young : town's growth. And then the discovery of coal at Lykens in 1825 gave the town an even greater boost. ; The Lykens Valley Railroad first in Dauphin county and fourth ;in the United States to carry an - thracite coal was completed in ! 1834, extending fifteen miles from ! Lykens to the Susquehanna River ' here at Millersburg. i Coal was brought to Millers - i burg on the railroad in horse - drawn cars and then was taken across the river on flat boats to Mt. Patrick, Perry county, j By 1847 the population of the town had grown to 500, and from jt'..en to 1860 it more than I doubled. 1 Contributing to this era of Mil - lersburg's growth were two fac tors: The arrival of a steam loco motive to replace the horse - drawn c.rs on the Lykens Valley Rail road; and the opening of the Wic onisco Canal, or feeder, connect ing Millersburg with the Penn sylvania Canal at Clark s Ferry. Completion of the Wiconisco Canal in 1848 made Millersburg an important town, atjd residents of this community owned many of the boats which carried coal from Millersburg to Harrisburg, Columbia Havre de Grace and Baltimore. In that same year the first steam . locomotiye, "The Lykens Valley," was placed, in service on the rebuilt Lykens Valley Rail' road. After that the flow of coal into Millersburg from Lykens was so great that there were some times as many as 100 boats lying on the two canal, basins, here, waiting to be loaded. August 25, 1849, Millersburg was incorporated as a borough, upon the petition of 72 freehold' ers. The first borough election was held in 1850, and Simon Wert was elected burgess. The borough was re - incorporated incorporated incorporated by an Act of Assembly May 6, 1864, and at the first election under its new charter, B. G. Steever was elected burgess. By 1857, the Northern Central Railroad since absorbed by the Pennsylvania Railroad had been completed as far north as Millersburg, and the " following year was completed to Sunbury. Flood Ruins Canal By 1880 the population of Millersburg Millersburg had increased to 1400. The Wiconisco Canal was put out of service by a flood in 1889, and was abandoned. However the old canal bed still can be seen at places alon the highway between Millersburg and Clark's Ferry Bridge. Town Keeps Growing The Millersburg of today is one of the most thriving communities in Dauphin county, with more than enough industries to take care of its entire population. It has broad, regularly laid - out streets. Homes are being added constantly and the town is studded with new buildings such as the High School, home of Steever R. Day Post, No. 326, American Legion, Legion, home of Loyal Order of the Moose, No. 59, Post Office, all erected in the past few years. In addition, both of its banks, the First National Bank, and the Millersburg Trust Company, both underwent extensive remodeling in the past several years. And in 1935 the United Brethren Church added two new wings to its red brick building on Market street. The building of homes is being spurred by Homes, Inc., a local organization which purchased - a piot in Bowman's extension, in the northeast section of town, and has already started the construction construction of four dwellings, with more to follow. Standard gauge railways are 4 feet, 81 - 2 inches wide.
