1996 mar 17 Bertolino marker
Gaiveston Scenes ^ Historical marker recalls local hero N ext time you're by 10th and Seawall Boulevard, stop and look at the new historical marker in memory of BOI Carmelo "Charles" Bertolino. Longtime islanders!! remember Charlie, an outstanding volunteer lifeguard, who saved more than 500 lives during his time on the sand. Sacred Heart's Father Frank Fabj and the Ibxas Historical Society's Mary Fay Barnes honcho'd the presentation, and Charlie's son Eddie Bertolino gave a moving response. The youngest Bertolino daughter, Ruby Roberts unveiled the marker along with her sister Chris Welsh, and brothers Eddie, Phillip & George Bertolino. An easy hundred family and friends crowded into the Knights of Columbus Hall for a Nautilus themed (thanx to Chris' killer deccos & Carol Kunz's giant cake) reception with lotsa' grandchildren & great-granders.
