Knife Wielding Girl Slashes Assailant $10,000 Bond Set For Man Charged In Rape Attempt ROWLAND -- A preliminary hearing on a charge of attempted rape was the most important case aired in Rowland recorder's court on Monday. Robert Mitchell was charged with attempted rape on Saturday evening. Judge John Edwards found probable cause and the defendant was bound over to the next criminal term of Robeson county superior court on 510,000 surety. According to the testimony, about 9:30 o'clock Saturday, near the veneer plant on Highway 301, Mitchell grabbed Retha Locklear as she was going home. He pulled her into some nearby woods and in the struggle her face was bitten. The girl was carrying a kife and used it on her assailant; he fled. Retha then reported the incident at the police station and told officers there that slue didn't know the man, but could identify him and that he had bee n struck by the knife in at least two places, one of them on the back. The police searched the scene the incident and found a cap, identified as belonging to Robert Mitchell. Beaton Hunt, charged with possession and possession for sale, was taxed ?100 on each count and costs. He appealed and bond was set at 5500. Dora Miles, charged with possession, was taxed $25 and costs. Charles P. West, Jr., was charged with an assault on his father. He drew 30 days, suspended on $50 and costs.
