 - Sheriff and being Wm. Stevens Talks Freely....
Sheriff and being Wm. Stevens Talks Freely. When a Bee-Nugget representative visited Pe Ell early Friday afternoon the streets were lined with hundreds of excited people who had gathered from all over the country. First report was that Stevens would not reveal his identity, nor that of his partner in crime. Probability is that he may have at first feared the vengeance of the crowd, as he did not know for some time but that he and his pal may have killed someone during the gun battle on Main street. He was confined under guard in the dingy Pe Ell jail until Sheriff Deggeller, Deputy Sheriffs Nort Wynn and J. A, Blankenship reached the scene, when they took charge of him. After being escorted to the street by Sheriff Deggeller and Deputy Wynn, Stevens was photographed by Frank Kent of Chehalis, who also took the other pictures printed fn this Issue of the Bee-Nugget of Messrs. Dunlap and Grass and Harry Visser. Stevens talked freely to the Bee- Nugget man. He gave his name as Robert Stevens, aged 25; his partner aa George Allen, 35. According to Stevens' story they left Ix (Angeles three months ago and worked their way north, stopping three weeks in Portland. Tuesday of last week they reached Chehalis, remaining here until Thursday, when they beat their way to Pe Ell on a freight train.
