Ex-Navyman New Galena Police Chief GALENA — Galena has a new chief of police — a retired Naval chief petty officer. He is Emmit E. Sackfield, who has been residing with his wife and four children in East Dubuque since July 1962. Sackfield, 41, will begin his new duties Monday. He will succeed succeed George Knautz, acting chief who will remain with the force as a patrolman. Sackfield retired from the Navy in October. He was in charge of Navy recruiting at Dubuque, Iowa, from July 1962 to November 1963. A former senior mineman with the Navy, he attended high schools in Sherrard and Matherville. Sackfield's starting salary will be $425 per month, according to City Manager Phillip Brown, who announced the appointment Wednesday. The police department has five officers and a meter maid.
