WHITTEMORE PAIR FATALLY HURT IN A COLLISION Both Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. Balgeman, prominent Whittemore residents for many years, died as the result of a car crash a mile and a half west of Hutchins, east of Wesley in Hancock county. The crash occurred about 5:45 last week Wednesday evening when the Balgeman 'car and one driven by Wilbert Olson, of Ma-' son City, Standard OH supervisor, collided. Mrs. Balgeman died in an ambulance en route to Mason City, and Mr. Balgeman died at Mercy hospital there the following day. Both suffered severe internal injuries, broken bones, cuts and bruises. At first Mrs. Balgeman was not believed seriously hurt, and an oxygen inhalator was used on Mr. Balgeman at the scene of the crash by the Britt ambulance attendants. They were both given first aid treatment at Britt, and thence taken by • ambulance to Mercy hospital, but Mrs. Balgeman had died en route. Cause of the crash is in doubt. According to a report to a local highway patrolman there were four cars involved in the events leading up to the crash. One car was proceeding west at a very slow speed ahead of the Balgeman car, also west. Two cars were proceeding east. The first car occupants noticed the Balgeman car put on its brakes just as the two cars passed. Mr. Balgeman, who was driving, evidently had just seen the slow car ahead of -him. For .. some reason the Balgeman car swerved to the left just as the ' car driven by Olson came along and the crash happened. Double funeral services were held yesterday at the Lutheran church at West Bend at 2 o'clock, with the Rev. A. F. -Render, of Fairvule, in Krharge, and "burial was made at West-Bend, Mr. arid Mrs. Balgeman are survived by eight : children: sons George, Louis, and Delbert, - of West Bend, and Harry, of Whitemore; and daughters, Mrs. : C. 'Meta) Johnson; Mrs. Oscar ;Ruth) Schattachneider, Daven>ort; Mrs. Frank (Viola) Behnke, ^a ttimer; and Mrs. William (Ber- liece) Heller, Algona. D/, ind Herbert, West Bend; and two ••isters, Mrs. Peter Campbell, Stewart Valley, Saskatchewan, ind Mrs. Fred Scnurg, Whittemore. Three children have died. A ;on Kermit died in Infancy, and i son Raymond died in a car wreck when he was 17 years old,/ \ daughter, Elaine, died at 5 years old. , , ,, ; . Mr. Balgeman was Horn May 3, 1875, son of the 'Louis Balge- mans, in Illinois. 'Mrs. Balgeman was born October 9, 1881, in Sermany, daughter of the Fred Kundes. They were married February 12, 1801 in Union Hill, 111. They lived on a rarm south of-' Whittemore 3Vs miles for 28 years, and in the fall of 1929 moved to Whittemore. In 1942 they moved to West Band, and in 1947 returned to Whittemore, Mr. Balgeman served for 1(1 years as county supervisor rep» resenting the southern district of the county, and Was chairman of the board for several years, A year ago lie was elected mayor of ^hittemore, and was also a member of the Whjttpmorp Cjpin- munity club. • '-.£
