In Washington, D.C., today, the Federal Aviation Administration issued an emergency order barring older Boeing 737s, such as Aloha's jetliner that ripped open over Hawaii, from flying higher than 23,000 feet if they have had more than 55,000 landings. The order is in effect until the affected airlines conduct complete visual inspections of the jets' first class cabin structure, which is the area that blew apart at 24,000 feet on the Aloha jetliner. FAA Washington spokesman Fred Ferrar said the order would affect Gf planes in the 737 100 and 737-200 series. The jets are in the fleets of Aloha, Piedmont and American airlines, he said. Yesterday. Aloha voluntarily grounded three older models in its fleet of 11 Boeing 737 jets. (One was already on the ground for routine maintenance.) Aloha spokesman Milton Goto today said no other Aloha jets are affected by the FAA's order, which also required carriers to inspect the planes for possible structural defects. "The planes will not fly until they are inspected and fixed." Goto said. The company hopes it can raise the number of planes back up to a fleet of 10, 11 or 12 planes "as soon as we can", Goto said, by doing the necessary repairs and possibly buying new jets. Boeing Commercial Airplanes revealed yesterday that the damaged jetliner "was one of its oldest 737-200s. in service since liXW. and told airlines to inspect their aging 737s.
