Gunman Shot i By Still Critical The condition of Ray W. Romick, 33, Evanston, Wy»., shot four times in a pistol duel with a police officer Saturday, remained "very critical" in Dee Hospital today. The shooting took place inside Dick's Club tavern, 318 25th St., when Detective Roberts F. Carver entered. The officer was searching for Romick, who was wanted .in connection with two recent srmed robberies in Ogden. A doctor gave Romick a 50-50 chance to recover. He is under treatment for gunshot wounds of the head and legs. One shot in his upper leg severed a main arterv. The shooting exchange between Romick and Detective Carver began when Romick grabbed the officer's .38-caliber service pistol by the barrel, and tried to wrest it from the officer. GOES FOR GUN Romick then went for his own gun, a nickle-plated .45 automatic pistol. In the ensuing gun fight. Detective Carver put four shots into Romick. The officer wasn't hit, but two of Romick's five shots crashed through a front window, of the tavern. One of the wild shots grazed the side of a passerby, Lester Hampton, 58, of 619 Patterson St. Police Chief Maurice J. Schooff said a 24-hour police watch has been set up in the hospital. Police said Romick was released from the Texas penitentiary last May after serving time for armed robbery and assault. Officers had not finished contacts to see if he had gotten into trouble in other states. : i ; ! i | i I j j ! • I
