Liberated Tank Co. Man Writes Jn a letter which was so long that lie was afraid two B-29s wouldn't be able .to carry it, S/Sgl. O>ven Sandmire of 1 lie 192nd Tank battalion outlined his years as a prisoner of the Japanese. Excerpts from his letter, written Oct. 1 from the Philippines, were sent to the. Gazette by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Sandmire, Richland Center. Sgt. Sandmire, who joined the Tank company while visiting friends in Janesville, sjioke of the Death March, life in the various prisons, work in the coal mine.s. and his liberation in liis letter which read, in part, as follows: •'Dearest Mom and All: I received your most welcome cablegram on Sent. 29 but I was in Manila so didn't read it until 2 p. m. today. This is the lirst word 1 hitve had from you since before the war. In fact I have only had two letters since being taken a prisoner of war. I got them both early in ','43 when I was in Cabanatuan prison camp. "Went to Manila yesterday to see a Filipino family that was very kind to me while I was working in Manila in '42. Was sure glad to see them but sorry to hear the father was killed by Filipino guerrillas in February, 1944. He was the one who gave us the food and money that helped us so much. Nevertheless. the family was glad to see me. "Gee, Mom, I'm so anxious to get home and see the family that 1 can't concentrate on what 1m writing. I suppose I should give yoU a brief outline of what has happened since the war ended for us in '42. Wait on Death March '•'first of all, we left the area as- sTgned 1 to us on the west coast of Bataan on April 11 and started toward San Fernando on that fa- • ippus Death March. We arrived at Camp O'Donnell April 21. On May 5 we started to Manila to build bridges but nine others and I were left for truck drivers. We started work on Mother's day and staj»d there until February, 1943. From Inere we went to Bilibid for four days and then to Cabanatuan until June 27; 1944, when we started to Japan. We boarded ship on July 2 and got to Mogi. Japan, Sept. i. What a trip! There we worked in coal mines under terrible conditions until the surrender on Aug. 14 • •>We left this camp- Sept. 13 and not on the hospital ship, USS Consolation, on Sept. 15 at Wakayama, Japan. From there we went to Okinawa and then to Manila on a navv transport, USS Haskell. "We are now in a camp for recovered personnel about 30 .kilometers south of Manila: We were told to stay in our company area otter 12 midnight tonight because there is a shipment of men going out' tomorrow. Maybe I'll be one of 'them. I hope! I requested to go bv plane. If so, I'll be m 'Frisco in'-three or four days, but if I go bv boat, it will take at least 20 'davs. I do want to be home for my birthday (Oct. 24) but I don't Health - -"Gee, Mom, there is so much to taW about that I couldn't get it on ^thousand pages. It's going to be so good to be home with you and km and the kids. I am in excellent health— weigh about 175, but Fm pretty soft.
