Grim Series Of Accidents Fatal For Skin Diver O.VNARD <1-PV- A grim series of accidents led to the death of a skin diver. Harold B. Gavenman, 31. a Canoga Park engineer and swimming instructor, was skin diving off Santa Barbara Island Saturday when he was struck by an unidentified speedboat and slashed on the back by its propellers. His wife Eleanor and friends pulled him into their boat and radioed for help. A helicopter from Oxnard Air Force Base arrix'ed, lowered a litter on a cable and began pulling Gavenman into the hovcrini craft when the cable snapped. Tlie litter, with Gavenman in it, lunsed an undetermined distance, •Jiruck the boat and slipped into !the water. Onlookers quickly dived into the water and pulled out the litter and Gavenman. Another helicopter arrived from the San Diego Coast Guard station, but Gavenman was oronounced dead on arrival at Hoag Memorial Hospital in New- DOrt Beach. .\n autopsy was set for today.
