Arrest made in fatal accident By JOYCEBOYD The Daily News GALVESTON - Galveston police arrested a suspect Thursday in a fatal hit and run accident that occurred Dec. 6, said Detective Sgt. Leo Singleton of the Criminal Investigation Division. William Anthony Hernandez, 19, of Galveston, was charged with failure to stop and render aid. Singleton said. A conviction ori that charge carries a maximum of five years in the state penitentiary and a $5,000 fine. Hernandez allegedly struck and killed pedestrian Danny Eugene Hughie, 24, about 2:30 a.m. as he crossed Avenue S near 49th Street. The accident badly mangled Hughie's body and shattered his skull, according to reports. Fragments of skull and brain matter spread west for 150 to 200 feet, police said. The impact from the crash knocked a shoe and sock off one of Hughie's feet and either the impact or the vehicle itself carried the man almost 100 feet west down Stewart, police said. Police estimated Hernandez's vehicle was traveling about 60 mph when it struck Hughie. Skid marks were found 285 to 310 feet west of the point of impact. Hernandez apparently lost control of his vehicle, which jumped the curb at the intersection of 50th Street and Avenue S, police said. After a lengthy investigation, Sgt. Felix Bergera, Bill May and Jim Kitchen located the suspect in Waco and traveled there to arrest him. The three sergeants were expected to return to Galveston with Hernandez late Wednesday evening, Singleton said. Hughie lived in the 5500 block of A venue 0 Ms.
