by not the The at declare a flag a all the to ft the by to of It - i j . - - - ! - THE MUSIC HALL. Editor World: That a pi ice uf amusement for the citizens ana tr tors of Vancouver is much needed is beyond contradiction. Why then has our City Council delayed its decision regarding this matter for so long a time? and, finally, left such a matter to be now decided upon by a majority vote of the ratepayers of Vancouver; mignt I ask why a counucil elected to represent the citiaens of this city should then have to consult those who elected them to carry out such improvements? improvements? The cause of the Jilly - dallylng policy can be traced to one source and one source alone toat of a feeling in the heart of the council which is actuated by a fear that trfcy will not be re - elected for KI7 and thereby lose their mighty dollar a day. Therefore, one section says, "Jf i vote for a music hall the church v. ill not support me at next election," whilst another section says, "If I oif ?nd the hotels and saloons I will forfeit their votes," so the general public are 'o be deprived of a music hall because the churches are opposed to such places of amusement. Are the churches opposed opposed 'to the theaters? I am of opinion that the majority (if not all) of the churches are not opposed to our having in this city a properly kept and well conducted music hall, but they ob ject to low dives. There Is no reason why a music hall cannot be conducted on the same lines as the famous AI - hambra in the city of London is conducted, conducted, though at one time it was an infamous place of resort. Any person can go there now and enjoy himself or herself for a few hours. 1 have every every reason to believe that the church people of Vancouver with the exception exception of a few narrow - minded cranks - will not oppose a good music hall, Jf such be conducted in proper lines, and under the supervision of the civic authorities. Such a place is more needed In this city than in most places, as we have men of all nationalities visiting our shores daily, some of whom leave for the Sound because they have no place of amusement tc frequent, when the theater is closed; besides, the 'theater is 'too expensive a place for most people who have only limited means. The general public - require amusement at a cost of 25 cents per night. If we get a good music music hall here I have no doubt but that many persons would spend their evenings evenings there in preferei.ee - to going to dives and houses of ill - tame, arm n it be for this purpose alone that a music hall ba opened, tnen I am of opinion that many families will have cause ta rejoice that their children can amuse themse - ives in an innocent manner. manner. Some people who are objecting to such sources of amusement have not been to them, therefore do they judge blindly they are blinded by prejudice. Such places are as harmless as bazaars and private theatricals got up to support the churches of Canada wnicn snomu noi need tne procerus , - . - - A ,.f.iill.r or a oazaar, u uiey hol an - unoj drifting into ..formalism;" and on this very account they judge wrongly on occasions as the present. The church l3S'nls " "VU'L "l '"', ' rt ! of innwent and ben f amusement, in fact, to an th ng at a proper time and in its proper that has the spirit of Christ in it uoes r.lice fhat. helns to improve body and I mind. It is onJy the abuse and r.ot the legitimate use of such amusements I that has to be guarded against, not ' alone in the music hall but In our 1 own churches. If we elect the right men for 1SS7 to represent us then we , need hav - ? no apprehensions as to the music hall amusement. A growing city of 20,000 needs a music hall now ar..i I we must have it at any cost, even at ' the cost of a rebuke from the churches. I OBSERVER. Vancouver, Oct. 1", In
