GOING TO KLONDIKE. Jchn T. McDermott, a brother of United States Marshal William .McDermott, .McDermott, is in the city today on a visit to his brother. Mr. McDermott is an old-timer old-timer old-timer in the west and was for a number of years a resident of Butte. He is now enjoying enjoying life in Los Angeles, Cal. Mr. McDermott will go to the Klondike region and will leave Los Angeles next spring for the frigid zone. "You have no idea here of the excitement on the coast over the gold discoveries in the Klondike," said Mr. McDermott today. "In Los Angeles business men mortgaged mortgaged their possessions and abandoned their stores to join the throng. Col. John Doyle, who has had charge of a property at Randsburg, owned by Butte men, was one of the first to leave, and is now well on his way up the Yukon. Thousands of men reached coast points and were not able to get money to carry them to the gold diggings. They had just money enough to reach the coast and they will suffer severely during the coming winter. "There is a great deal of gold mining going on in California just now. The Mother lode is one of the wonders of the world. It is a mile wide, and shafts are being developed to a great depth on many portions of it."
