Andy Falls earns high school letter in football, Nov 1972
Thirty-Three Win Ram Grid Monograms When the 1973 Del Rio High School Rams football squad line up, there should be 20 seniors with at least one grid monogram including five .with two letters ... the richest Del Rio football lode in Coach Claude Fest's regime here. In all, Fest announced today that 33 football players off of the 1972 squad will receive monograms as well as the team managers. The list includes: Felix Garcia, Mario Hernandez and Mike Sadler, quarterbacks; Gus Ramirez, Jeff Burr, Isidoro Barrera, Jerry Fay, David Simpson, Steven Quinones, Jeff Kemp, Leon Best, Gary Rodriguez and Andy Falls, backfield personnel. Centers Rusty Chalk and Mike Scott, guards Richard Salazar, Victor Luna, Keith Stone, Bernie Herrera, Pat McElhaney and Cat Garcia joined tackles Tom Caldwell, Mike Orr, David Hullum, Ricky Portales and George McFarlane on the lettermen list. _ Ends Ervin Ridout, Carlos Cordova, Humberto Barrera and Ruben Cardenas were included with backfield runner Bobby Garcia and lineman Mike Borgardts to complete the player list. Managers Joe Harrington, Acton Brumley and Joe Adams were also named by Fest for monograms. Among those receiving their second football accolade are Chalk, Hernandez, McFarlen, Simpson and Stone. Stone is the punter, placekicker and kickoff specialist besides playing two-ways on the scrimmage crews. Simpson is the fullback who, because of sprinter speed, could wind up as a running back in '73 with Quinones taking over as the short yardage rusher. Chalk is the center-tackle and McFarlen is the two-way lineman while Hernandez, who alternated as the signal caller this year and played some defensive secondary, could conceivably operate as a running back if other quarterback prospects develop by next fall. He's quick and gutty with the football and fairly fast and only his short stature (5-6) kept him from being a great passer although his record was fair this year. With eight offensive players, nine if Caldwell is counted, and eight defensive players coming back Coach Fest and his staff of C.D. Kirchner, Walter Levermann and Ronnie McFadin have the best football returnee prospects at Del Rio in a lone time. Fest said today that the pre-season pickers for the Texas Football Magazine will "probably name us to win the District 32-AAAA next year" and added, "I hope they do because that's just what we have in mind."
