A. C. Mikel Part 4
On the morning of April 3, 1S16, Mikel got up and went to feed his horses. He returned to his residence and after breakfast went back to the barn to water the horses. This bam is situated at the east end of an alley irf the central part of the village of Downs. The place where he was wont to obtain the water wa at a livery stable west of the barn and about middle way to the street toward toward the west end of the alley. Almost Almost opposite this livery stable Is the roar of McConnell's gnrage In which young Craig was working. He went Into the livery stable and was returning with two large buckets of water. A man by the name of Lantx was standing at the door according to the statement of Mr. Young. As Mr. Mikel reached the middle of the alleyway, Craig Is said to have accosted hlra. saying "If you hav anything to say about me, say It to my face and say It to me now." Mikel is said to have replied, "What's the matter. Let me alone." MIkol set the buckets down and backed up. CTalg followed. Mikel motioned him to go away and by this time had backed west toward the street about twenty feet. He then turned and ran the remainder of the distance until he reached the street sidewalk. He turned, and when in this position Craig is said to have struck him. He fell, his head striking the concrete sidewalk and never moved. But one blow was struck.
