their previous arrangement, on the 22nd of September, '1711, pounced down unexpectedly upon the settlers of the Province. One hundred and thirty whites were butchered In the Roanoke settlement. 60 or more among the Swiss and palatines around New Bern, and many of the Huguenots between New Bern and Beaufort and In Carteret were killed, the exact number of the latter never being known.
