THE VANCOUVER WORLD. FIRST BALLOON EVER BUILT IN VANCOUVER - as it. SHOWING NET AMD BASKET. For the first time in the history of the city a balloon is being constructed in Vancouver. In fact, as far as can be ascertained, this is the first balloon built on the Pacific Coast north of San Francisco, and the first in the Northwest Northwest this side of Chicago. The balloon, which will be a hi story - maker as far as Vancouver is concerned, is being constructed on designs furnished by and under the direct supervision of Cape. James Haswell, one of the best known aeronauts in America. Mr. James Schwartz is the manage r for Capt. Haswell and the two have been in Vancouver for some little time. The balloon is being constructed at the factory of Kaplausky & Herman, 313 Water street, and it is a credit to Vancouver that a job of such dimensions could be undertaken here. The balloon is 100 feet high, and it is interesting to know in this connection that it calls for two miles of sewing. The basket will hold ten people, and the cost will be about $5000. This money has been retained to Vancouver through its having a factory equipped to WORKING ON TUB BALLOON. do the work. It will be the largest balloon ever sent aloft on the Pacific Coast. Capt. Haswell, having found that he can have the work done here, is now preparing plans fo r a dirigible which he will have built this summer, and with which he expects to make trips to and from Victoria. Arr angementi are now under way for the formation of an aero club here, which will afford instruction in the making and tailing of dirigible balloons, as well as biplanes and triplanes. The balloon now being constructed will be ready to go upwards about May I. It will be used as a "captive" and will, be held by a steel cable 1500 feet long. The pictures accompanying this article show work on the balloon itself and also on the net. Further particulars will be forthcomin later.
