Annie Poage named Kentucky Colonel
Col. Poage is believed to be the first woman named a Kentucky Colonel by the Governor in 1920. Other women broke this barrier in the newspaper industry and in other walks of life. "Governor James D. Black of the Grand Old Commonwealth of Kentucky appointed Miss M. Annie Poage, of Ashland, aide-de-camp on his staff with the rank of Colonel."
