Anderson (Indiana) Herald 20 february 1977 - Comedy Opening Delights By KAY LARSON...
Comedy Opening Delights By KAY LARSON Recreation-Arts Editor I n d i a n a R e p e r t o r y Theatre's production of Noel Coward's "Private Lives" played lo a very receptive audience at its Friday night opening. No small wonder. A well-written comedy. "Private Lives." abounds with rapid-fire, hilariously funny and yet shrewdly true, lines. PLAYWRIGHT NOEL COWARD was a genius. But it takes at least two good actors lo carry Coward's work off well. Nicholas Hormann and Sara Woods arc just what the play calls for. Playing beautifully together, these two were responsible for Ihe resounding success of Ihe IRT production. Portraying a divorced couple, which can not live together but can not live apart. H e r m a n n and Woods deliver rapid-fire fight scenes and smoothly lender moments with equal ease. THE COMEDY DEVELOPS around the r e m a r r i a g e s of Ihe central two f i g u r e s . E a c h , with new spouse, discovers the other honeymooning, ironically al the same resort hotel and, worse yet, in adjoining rooms. The two ccnlral characters reaffirm Ihcir original love affair and run off together leaving spouses behind. Still, their past was not left .behind, and a rekindled love could not continue without fireworks. IT IS THESE fireworks which create many of the mosl humorous lines, much to the enjoyment of theatregoers. T h e c h a r a c t e r s p o r t r a y e d by H o r m a n n a n d W o o d s d r e s s flamboyantly and only in black and w h i l e , l e a v i n g audience members speculating aboul the meaning behind this purposeful choice in costuming. Perhaps the answer to the selection is as simplistic as pointing out the opposites in their characters and that t h e s o l u t i o n s t o t h e i r m a r i t a l difficulties can not be viewed as simple black and while choices. AS ALWAYS, IRT can be depended upon to go lo great detail in the creation of sets and backdrops for all productions. "Private Lives" was yet another excellent performance by members of the scenic crew, this time headed by guest designer, Eric Head. The comedy plays through March 12 at the I n d i a n a Repertory Theatre located in the Alhenacum al 411 East M i c h i g a n St. in I n d i a n shouldn't be missed. Comical Foursome Lindsay, Hormann, Woods, Abajian
