Wellington upsets T-A, 68-61 BY STEVE SHOOT C-T Staff POLO-The Wellington Tigers upset the Tino-Avalon Dragons, 68-61, to advance to first-round Sectional action action Monday at Chillicothe. The Tigers were fourth seeded seeded in the Polo District tournament and Tina-Avalon hod been seeded second. In the girls championship clash, the host Polo girls, the number one seed in the tournament, held off a determined determined Hardin-Central team to claim the District championship, championship, 75-69. WELLINGTON 68. TINA-AVALON 61 The Tina-Avalon Dragons were as cold as the blizzard blizzard howling outside the Polo gym in the first quarter. The Dragons missed their first eight shots from the field, before senior Stan Trussed scored on a fastbreak with 4:36 left in the first quarter. T-A was lucky in that the Tigers were only leading by six points when the Dragons finally scored. And score the Dragons did--that is, for a little · while. Trussell's layup set off an 11-0 scoring spree for T-A and the Tigers were reeling. Trussed, who ended the night with a game-high 23 points, popped in a pair of 20-footers and a 15-footer to power Tina-Avalon to its only lead of the night. The Tiger's regrouped with a couple of key offensive rebounds and capped the first period by recapturing the lead with just three seconds left in the quarter when Scott Bayless stole the ball at midcourt and raced in for the go ahead bucket. Wellington stretched its lead to 17-11 in the opening moments of the second quarter as the offense began to work the ball inside to their big men, David Finkemeier and Mike Hendrick. T-A fought right back behind the outside outside gunning of Trussell and the inside dominance of sophomore Larry Kissick, to knot the score at 17-all. Finkemeier began to make his presence felt as he popped away from inside and outside to buld a 30-23 cushion for the Tigers. Trussell hit on a three-point play to narrow the gap to four, but the Tigers used a short jumper by Hendrick, sandwiched between a pair of eight-footers by Finkemeier to extend their lead to 36-26 with just seconds to play. Trussell, who canned 13 points in the first two quarters, drove the baseline and hit a bucket with just three seconds left in the half to bring T-A to within eight points, 36-28. The third quarter was essentially the same as the entire game, as each team took turns playing hot and cold. The Dragons did manage to trim three points off the Tiger lead, primarily because of some good by Joel Sykes and David McDaneld. McDaneld led the T-A comeback, early in the .quarter, with a steal, an assist and a short jumper pair of free throws by Trussell brought the Dragons within one, 52-51, with 5:35 left in the game. The Tigers then recaptured control of the game forcing two quick T-A turnovers and converting them easy baskets in just over one minute of play, upping their lead to 58-51 with 4:15 remaining in the contest. "I'm not disappointed in the way the boys played tonight," said T-A Head Coach Dale Wallace. "We shoot very well, but we hustled and played hard just beat us." Kissick finished the night with 18 points and chipped in with 10. Finkemeier led Wellington with points, followed by Hendrick with 17, Steve Bailey Bayless 10. POLO 75. HARDIN-CENTRAL 69 The Polo girls rolled out to a 20-14 first quarter and then held on for their lives down the stretch defeated Hardin-Central. Hardin-Central was down 38-28 at the half, but out and chipped away at the Polo lead to trail by points after three quarters of play. Polo met the fourth quarter challenge, however,
