MHifary cutbacks" to have only minor impact at Norton (Continued from Page 1) war in Asia, and isn't that what, the public wants? We are see-! mg the first real tangible evidence of across-the-board cuts that must come if the country begins to reduce the $30-billion annual cost of this war. "Yet, the present $915-milIion savings from new cut-backs over the nation does really mean little loss of Aic Force payroll to be felt in our valley. The opportunities for transfer to other Federal agencies — in the fields of education, medicare, etc. — may mean that no one is to be affected adversly. "We anticipate that the reduction will be primarily in the maintenance end at Norton, involving, of course, the 63rd Military Airlift Wing. The-Starlifter activity at Norton, .which has been the overload from Travis AFB, natiurally will slacken as the heavy movement to southeast Asia is curtailed. "It is a notable fact that the 94-man civilian 'rif is nothing in comparison with the loss of 9,215 civilians in the Norton reduction of 1965-66. And even the military cut of 1,169 does not approximate the, 1965-66 transfei:, which lowered Norton's military personnel from 12,362 to 5,699. "Businessmen recognize that airmen do not have as much at stake in the community, on the whole, and their local expenditures are less than civilians average." There are approximately 7,000 military personnel at Norton, and about 4,000 civilians are employed there, according to Bill Berkeley, base information officer. "This cutback should be good news to the families of young men of military age," said Pet tis. "It is bound to have a beneficial effect on the draft and taxes." Last year, it was estimated, procurement programs of the Army and Air Force spent $85- million in San Bernardino county. ' • At Fort Irwin a total of 357 civilians and 947 military personnel will lose their jobs or be transferred to other installations. George AFB, Victorville, wUl lose 45 civilians and 81 military, while Edwards AFB loses 148 civilians and 123 uniformed personnel. Only 57 civilians and 352 military will be taken from March AFB in Riverside county where a number of Redlands residents are employed. It is part of the Strategic Air Command (SAC).
