the r o w and 41725 Area Guard Units Begin Summer Drills in Desert Twelve hundred National Guardsmen from Northern California began two weeks of annual summer trainingSunday at the US Army's huge Armor and D e s e r t Training Center at Fort Irwin, north of Barstow. Included are the Headquarters and Headquarters Company of the 2nd Brigade, San Jose; the 1st Battalian, 149th Armor, Salinas; the 3rd Battalion, 149th Armor, Roseville; the 4th Battalion, 149th Armor, Newark; the 1st Squadron, 170th Armored Cavalry, Sacramento; and units of the 149th Infantry Division Support Command from various communities in the Ba'y'Arear During the two week period, the guardsmen will spend most of their time under combat conditions in the desert away from the main on Fort Irwin.
