City for Maya Arts Going Up New Settlement Is Near Ancient Yucatan Ruins Caller-Times News Service MERIDA, Mexico -- There's a new "city" going up in Mexico's state of Yucatan, ft's strictly for the Maya Indians, de- cendants of the mysterious Gas Camp Coolers Available By GEORGE S. WELLS Herald Tribune Service On my first 'camping trip, which is longer ago than i care to admit, I remember that we used an ingenuous method to preserve our spoilabie foods. The basic ingredient \vas an olri orange crate. Tim was swathed in strips of muslin cloth and suspended by a rope from a tree. The new ' settlement, called Aldca Maya, is just a five-minute walk from Uxmal (pronounced Oosh-mal), a 10th Century Maya metropolis, noted for the perfection of its stone mosaics, and one of Ihe lop tourist attractions in Yucatan. U n l i k e t h e thalrhed-roof dwellings of the ancients, whose architectural artistry was reserved for enduring civic and ceremonial structures, these modem Maya homes will have running water, electricity, tiled floors and bathrooms.
