(AP) -five-day Intensive air and ground search for the origin of radioed distress call from a little boy toned down today to four radio directional finders. State Police Chief Martin Vigil said Sunday, "After all the effort, the last five days, we haven't been able to come up with information that the situation is valid Vigil said in a news conference, "There's no information ihat there actually is somebody out there, and where this person might be." He said, "There's 'nothing definite that the person is in New Mexico anyway. He could be anywhere. "We are curtailing the operation, but certainly not dis continuing It," he sold. A mysterious distress call 'rom a child calling himself Larry was reported Tuesday night by a California citizens band radio operator who said young boy's voice was calling [or help, saying he was in Mexico. Tire report said the vole* indicated his father had fallen over dead in their pickup truck. Since then, citizns band opcr- itors throughout the nation lave passed along reports of boy's voice crying for help, but none has led to anything. Vigil was asked about the possibility of n hoax. He said, "The possibility ex- lists. But we can't take thai chance. But it's only realistic restrict this thing after a reasonable period." He said radio directional finders will be set up in the Albuquerque-middle Rio Grande Valtejr area to continue trying to pick up a signal.
