Since Congressman Grimes, of Georgia, sat himself down at table ia a Washlngtoa hotel, at which the Hon. C. H. J. Taylor was the guest of another Democrat, aspir ing colored men probably realize that Democratic taffy does not extend to associations ' at the dinner table. ' Mr. Taylor, .though a colored man, . has been the pet of the Democratic party for six years. Appointed as Minister to Liberia by President Cleveland, he has ever slnoe devoted himself to the Democra tic party, and tried to convince the negroes that here was . the party of their friends; that they had only to become Democrats to secure social equality with their old masters. masters. He came to Chicago and with drew from the convention , of colored men because he could not swing it for the Democratic party. He then went to Washington and again withdrew from the convention of colored men held there last week for the same reason. The Democrats have enjoyed this "independ ence" of the colored man Taylor. They have patted him on the back and encour aged him. but when he wanted to eat his dinner in the same hotel where Congressman Congressman Grimes, of Georgia, eats his dinners he was becoming entirely too democratic, and had to be taaght a lesson in propriety by the Southern men. It is sad to see such lack of harmony between ' conspicuous Georgia Democrats like Grimes and Taylor Taylor oyer such little thing as a hotel dinner, dinner, but it may teach Mr. Taylor that Democratic friendship for the negro has Its limit. s dis-c a it
