Huskers’ 42 -point run at start extends streak over Cowboys By Dennis Dodd sportswrlter Lincoln Neb— Nebraska found out that Barry Sanders is for real But in a 63-42 loss to the seventh-ranked Huskers on Saturday Oklahoma State discovered that its defense isn’t Sanders the nation’s leading rusher ran for 189 yards and scored four times against the Huskers Most of that just served to raise Nebraska’s eyebrows after the Huskers jumped out to a 42-0 lead in the first 18 minutes of the supposed showdown Some showdown Nebraska piled up 662 yards in total offense and I-back Kenny Clark ran for 256 yards the second highest single-game total in Nebraska history and three touchdowns Quarterback Steve Taylor rushed for three scores and passed for two others For Oklahoma State 4-1 it was a 27th straight year of frustration The lOth-ranked Cowboys haven’t beaten Nebraska 6-1 since 1961 and are 2-26-1 overall in the series “I didn’t expect a game that wide open” Nebraska linebacker Broderick Thomas said “After it was 35-0 I started getting worried for them I would have hated to run 70 or 80 points on them and make them look real bad after they were averaging 50 points per game” The game at least lived up to its offensive label Oklahoma State was the top scoring team in the country (50 points a game) and Nebraska was No 2 (45) coming in And if you take away the 35-0 first quarter the Cowboys had the upper hand Quarterback Mike Gundy was 17 of 30 for 247 yards passing and two touchdowns All-America receiver Hart Lee Dykes caught seven passes for 125 yards giving him 155 for his career which breaks the Big Eight record of 150 held by Iowa State’s Tracey Henderson The 42 points were the most scored against a Tom Osborne-coached team and the most by an opponent at home since Oklahoma won here 48-0 in 1949 “I’m a little disappointed we didn’t stop them a little better Ntbriiki 63 Oklahoma Itite 42 Oklahoma Sf 0 21 7 14 -
