This 1873 contest between Yale and Eton in New Haven showed that the various British football codes and American versions of the game at colleges had not yet diverged to the point where they were unrecognizable to one another. Given these sides played with 11 men instead of the larger units that existed in some American versions, it is likely they were playing by FA rules... i.e. the Association game, or soccer.
