I it 5 GIANTS TRIUMPH IN LAST MINUTE OF PLAY, 24-21 By C. A. LOVETT. THOSE Giants of pro football staged a thriller in the windswept confines of the Polo Grounds yesterday, nosing out Ernie Nevers and his Chicago Cardinals in a seesawing extravaganza by a 24-21 score. They put on a genuine Frank Merriwell finish to win by the margin of a left-footed drop-kick by Tony Plansky, the Georgetown giant of old, in the last play of the game. It was a boot as remarkable for its accuracy and distance as for its element of surprise. Tony got it away beautifully at a fairly difficult angle and from the 30 yard line, necessitating its spinning nearly fifty yards to clear the crossbar by not more than two feet and just inside the near upright. One Point Disallowed. Preceding this hair-raiser the Giants had taken a two-touchdow1 lead in the first half, largely through Benny Friedman's passing proclivity, only to have a safety and Chicago touchdowns in the second and third quarters put the Cardinals in front. Nevers piled in another touchdown himself on an intercepted pass in the shadow of the Giants', goal, to add insult, but when Ernie kicked the goal for point from placement it was disallowed as the penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct by one of his mates. This break put the Giants within seven points of a tie verdict and they went out promptly and knotted the count. The Giants kicked off and after an exchange of punts launched a diversified attack that edged into Chicago- territory. Friedman got off a short pass to Plansky, who was downed on the 15 yard line. Friedman and Feather made small gains through the line before Friedman heaved to Sedbrooke for a touchdown and Benny added the point from placement. Early in the second period another punt trading flair left the Giants on Chicago's 44 yard stripe. A hurl, Plansky to Feather, netted 17, and Friedman slipped back to the 40 yard line to pass to Flaherty near the goal line, and Ray slid over. Again Friedman's boot was true. Moran's Kick Blocked. Soon after this juncture Don Hill, an old backfield mate of Nevers at Stanford, blocked a kick by Moran deep in Giant territory and the ball bounded over the goal line, where Hill and Moran fell on it and it was ruled a safety for the invaders' first score. MacDonald, Rose and Nevers combined then in a running attack and a Nevers pass to Kassell was good for 17 and another to Rooney advanced it to the Giants' 14 yard line. There Ernie heaved to Rooney, who was tackled as he fell over the goal line. Nevers added the extra point. GIANTS Pos. CARDINALS Flaherty Dowling Meilzinar .L.T....
