Cyrenius Van Mater a loyalist gave the hiding place of Richard Stockton

about a year after the capture, Cyrenius Van Mater was indicted for "giving information to the enemy and causing the capture of Richard Stockton and John Conover in Dec 1776". Cyrenius Van Mater was fined $300 pounds and sentenced to 6 months in jail. He only served a small amount of time. on 8 July 1778 the NJ Gazette reported that "the enemy, in their passage through the country, released Cyrenius Van Mater. He went off with them to NY, leaving a large real and personal estate behind him
