' i A 'Irene' Shows Age- Age- Stale jokes, stale songs, stale mannerisms and a stale Btory all made "Irene" one of the most crashing bores to hit the PAC stage in a long time. But this show is totally professional and has quite a few things going for it: staging by Peter Gennero, direction by Gower Champion and Meg Bussert in the title role. Two of the more memorable songs are "Alice Blue Gown" and "You Made Me Love You." Miss Bussert was often quite charming as the feisty Irish lass who-wins who-wins who-wins the love of.a rich "iceberg." However, her charm was . Kelly counterbalanced by the obnoxious, hammy, totally over-stated over-stated over-stated gestures of Patsy Kelly. Miss Kelly played the role of Irene's mother as if she were in a seedy burlesque house. But "Irene" is too old to stand even the slightest ill (it was originally presented on Broadway in 1919). And even though the company does have the professional polish, the veneer of the creaky old girl just seems too brittle not to crack. ' Paula Orth
