HOLDING ( ot'KT IN I'lTTSHI KUH. The Mrst court held in Pittsburgh was February, 1775, under the authority of Virginia. When the country we.-t of the mountains began to be settled there was a dispute between Pennsylvania and Virginia as to who owned it. Virginia authorized Ir. John Connolly as her representative in Pittsburgh He issued a jiiauiiesto as "Captain ami Commandant of the militia of Pittsburgh and its Ue-endencies," and Arthur S Clair, then a J list ice of the Peace of Westmoreland county arrested and imprisoned Connelly, who after his release obtained a commission as Justice of the Peace of Augusta county, Virginia, of which all territory between the Ohio and Mononga-heia rivers was claimed to be a part and in time ousted sev ral of the justices of Westmoreland county. The first Virginia court held in Pittsburgh was by Geo. Grogan, John Campbell. J !in Connolly, 1 orsey Pente-4-ost, Thomas SmaUmau and John Gibson, Justices of the Peare. The courts were continued until Noveinlw-r 177i, the territory then being called West Augusta county. It was then divided into Ohio, Vohogartia and Monongalia counties, Pittsburgh being iu Vohogania -ountv. 0urr. was beld iu this ,-ounty until 180, in Pittsburgh, Washington and on the farm of Andrew Heath on the Moiiou-gaheta river. In 177:t the curt of Westmoreland comtTy found a true, bill for misdemeanor against the notorious Simon Girty. He ewaped to Pittsburgh ami was cmimis-siobed a Lieutenant of utUiria by Virginia, i Felonry 22, 177,Y in the same day Rolen Hanna was heid in l.Ooo pounds eririty for refn-ing to take tin- oath of allegiance to Virginia. The Sheriff on this rtate was ordered to erect a ''1 tucking retool" for scolding wives in th- Monon-gabela river, the tirst pnbiic work erected in Pittsburgh.
