HOPELESS SEARCH FOR EARHART M) NOONAN NEAR El TWO VESSELS'ENGAGED IN VAIN HUNT FOR FLIERS ORDERED TO HONOLULU HONOLULU, July 17.—(/PJr-Ta- pering off the seemingly hopeless South Seas hunt for Amelia Earhart, the first two vessels in the search started homeward today, leaving an aircraft carrier and three destroyers to comb the torrid areas where she and her navigator vanished two weeks ago. The Coast Guard cutter Itasca and the mine sweeper Swan were ordered to return here from equatorial waters after completing a vain search of tlie Gilbert Islands, 600 miles west o'f bleak Howlanci Island. Two weeks aap yesterday, Miss Earhart and ETederick J. Noonan disappeared on a 2,570-milc flight from Lae, New Guinea to Howland, where the Itasca wan stationed to aid the fliers on a world-girdling journey which Miss Earhart said was "Just for fun/' The Itasca, her fuel running low, started back by way of Howland, and the mine sweeper headed directly for Pearl Harbor. The Swan, entered the hunt from a position half; way between here and Howland. There was no announcement here concerning how long the aht craft carrier Lexington and three destroyers would remain in the search, which naval authorities previously indicated would end today. All thio wpek, planes from the. carrier have swept over the vast area 1,500 miles south of here in which tho avlatrix disappeared in her land plane. The navy's greatest search had colvered nearly 240,000 square miles, despite tho hardships of sickening heat, tropical rain squalls and lack of definite information where the aviatrix landed her fuelless plane. To End Search Sunday. WASHINGTON, July 17. Navy department officials said today that unless there were new developments, the navy search for Amelia Earhart, filer lost in the Pacific, probably would be ended ended by Sunday. ;
