MOfiNiftti, OCiOflbK '), an - -SEVEN Mrs. Willie Skaggs' Home Decorated With Old Relics Bannisters of Mrs. Herald Photo) MARY ANN WOODRUM Correspondent ANSTED - Mrs. Willie "Miss Willie" Tyree Skaggs of Ansted, who will celebrate her 97th birthday anniversary Jan. 15. was visited by this reporter Monday alter Mayor \V. B. Bragg said she,was the oldest resident in Ansted. Expecting to find her sitting in a rocker at .the log cabin hope her late husband built for her in 1931, it was a surprise to see the"petit, snappy.eyed woman" hanging out cloths. ·. When she worked no one would have .guessed that one year ago she had fallen and broken her hip and when taken to the hospital was told she would never walk again. The house is decorated with relics of the past. Not a speck of dust could be seen on the marble top dresser, wash stand, night table and walnut bed and head board which is at least 8 feet tall. "Miss Willie" said the bed belonged to her mother and is over 100 years old. Portraits Decorate Wall Family portraits adorned the log walls in carved frames along with a large painting of Fayetteville drawn during the qvil War in-1883. A large spinning wheel took'up one corner of her living room. In her kitchen an extra long buffet which she said used to be in the home of her parents, Joe McClung and Saffle Tyree. who lived in - the famous Tyree Tavern sometimes known as the "Hallwav House" after her grandparents died. On the buffet was a platter which she said probably didn't have much value, but to her it was her most prize possession since it had belonged to a slave of her mothers, "Ole Aunt Fanny." "Miss Willie" had finished washing a load of cloths on the wash board and sheets that were ready to hang out could not have been any drier if put through a .wringer. . Attended Public Schools "Miss Willie" said she was bom on Stringtown Road and when she was 2 months old she moved to the home of her aunt and uncle. George and Mary Imboden, known as "Continment." She attended Ansted' public schools and Grcenbrier Girls School. "Miss Willie" said she didn't marry until she was 40 years old. Her husband, was a lumberman and ran a sawmill. He died in 1940. "Miss Willie" said she used to attend the Methodist Church in Ansted. but she said there was no use to go now, "I can't hear too good or see too well." On the back porch there were four stacks of wood "Miss Willie" had cut. Mayor Bragg said he and his wife took Willie" her evening meal. Oel away tram the everyday, visit "ME" ·;.
