A pleasant little scene was enacted at the Y. Jl C. A H-jtardny evening. The occasion was the preoentation, to Private Will Conlin of the famous 3 xth United States infantry, of a bean tiful solid Kold watch by • number of his former shopmates at ths Nllts Tool works. The little party gathered in the pir lors at the association aboat 8 o'clock A number of the Niles employees were pr<sent, and there were also many of the feminine gender in evidence, making the association to much the pleasanter. The chairman, with M. 0. Burns, who waa to present the watch and Private Ooolin, occupied places at the front. The chairman introduced Mr. Burns in a few neat sentences, nnd the latter covered himself with honor in his pperrt. He spoke first of the high esteem in which the citizens of our city and of the whole country as well, hold the aofdieis of the gallant Rath. He then laid emphasis on the fact that what the country needs now is good cilizmB as well as good soldiors. Men who can Sght with ballots as well as with bullets The speaker doubted not that the young soldier would prove as true in the garb of a citizen as iu that of c soldier. Then with a few hnppy ex pressions of the goo} will of his fellowmen and employees the speaker banded Private Conlin the watch. The latter could not stand up against the forces of friendship and good will as he conld the forces of the enemy and after saying that he thanked hia frienda for their kindness, was compelled to resume his seat. The pleasant occasion patssd off with friendly hand grasps all around and abundant well wishes for the young soldier. The watch was engraved by Helvey, the jeweler, and is one of the moat handsome time pieces ever seen: on the case is engraven a pretty representation of San Juan hill. Santiago and around it the words, ' 'Sixth Regiment United States infantry July 1, 1803," on the reverse side of the watch is the inscription, "Presented to Mr. Conlin by the employees of the Niles Tool works, Hamilton, Ohio.
