Work was begun on the street car lino in Freeport Tuesday morning in East Freeport, at the end of the Jacob Brubaker property. Fifty-two men went to work and the force was increased this afternoon. Already tho ties and stringers are set to a point near the Kraft house. The track is a Btanelard gunge, four and a half feet wide. Tho work is done as follows: The ties arc of wood, 4x6 inches; they are placed in tho ground at a depth of several inches, and sixteen fpotjstringers are then placed in position. Anglo blocks are nailed on each side of tho stringers,and heavyspikes drove through the stringers. The rail is then laid, and after the tilled in is done the iron ia level with the surface. Tho rails arrived from tho east today, and they are laid us tho work progresses. There will be a double track a distance of 301) feet either aide of Stephonson street bi ielgo. Contractor Hewett has three experienced men in charge of the work, though ho personally superintends everything himself. C. C. Proctor is the chief, and tho foremen arc J. W. Kennedy, of Chicago, and S. S. Brodo, of Klkbart, Ind. Tho father of Kennedy was at one time a resident of Lena, ami, it will be remeuibereel, created quite a sensation last spring by appearing at that place and claiming considerable property. Mr. Hewett expects that the Stephenson street lino will bo ready for tho cars in a few weeks. llo expects to finish that lino a week from next Saturday night, ami on tho Monday following ho will begin operations on the lines to run on either side of tho city. •George C.
