Haberlein Statement Is Termed Regrettable The President of the Board of Allegany County Commission- Sullivan, of has crs today said it is "regrettable that Shcriff Haberlein (Paul C.) is chose to use Ihe newspapers to (the to the commissioners at the circumstances surrounding the recent escape incident." The statement by Mrs. Lucile Roedcr referred to the escape of William Calvin Smith, 17, Oidtown, last Thursday from the county portioa of the City Jail which is being used until .he new county jail-office building is ready for occupancy. It also referred to a statement issued by Sheriff Haberlein Saturday in which he was critical of the board for failure to act on his requests and explained why he did not attend an executive meeting of the board last week. Mrs. Roeder said today "V/e had asked Sheriff Haberlein to appear on Friday at our meeting to discussjlheLsituation. This is a procedur& "that we would follow with 'any department head in a similar circumstance "It was not .-'our purpose to make a great-'to-do about the incident. We realize that the temporary accommodation a Ihe city lockup leaves a lot to be desired and we hope that the new. facilities will be properU manned and supervised to avoid just such occurrences.
