Creston garage man, i escaped from his burning automobile about 7:30 Sunday evening with only 'slight scratches, after he was forced to drive down an eight foot embankment to aroki hitting an approaching automobile which was passing a truck. The accident occurred on federal highway No. 34 about 1'i miles west of the Adams-Union county lir.s. Schrodt, driving a 1538 ford V-S. proceeding westward on the highway, was carrying a small can of gasoiine in the back seat of his car, going to the aid of a. motorist whose car had run out of gasoline. As he came down the highway a truck approached from the west and suddenly a car following the truck pulled out to go around. It waf a. cafe of either a head-on collision or take to the ditch and Schrodt chose the latter alternative. As his car went over the embankment the gasoline can upset, allowing th« liquid to come in contact with an extension hot air heater in the rear of the car. Instantly tft« interior of the car was a ma&s of flames but Schrodt was able to get out of the car with only slight bruises. A!though tbe interior of the car was cotnpietely burned, it is not believed that the motor was harmed. The loss was covered by insurance.
