C amp amp aigning for months throughout the sprawl- i ng district, O ’Brien gave t he 10-year incumbent a particularly tough race in 1986, with M arlenee winning by a 534 534 7 percent margin. “ Buck was part of a Montana Montana tradition of populist Democratic politicians, much like (then) Gov. Ted Schwinden,” recalled Joe L amson, who was campaign m anager for Democratic U .S. Rep. Pat Williams in the state’s western congressional congressional district during the same time frame. “ Buck was on the road c onstantly campaigning, c harging that Marlenee wasn’t working hard enough for Montana ranch- e rs and farmers during a tough period for the state’s natural resource industries. industries. He also won some support support in Billings and Great Falls in urging more social spending.” O’Brien tried again in 1988, but didn’t fare as well, with Marlenee winning by a 56-44 percent margin.
