C-J 6-24-1900 Gov. Posey - e e e Got. Posey LUced Jsffersonvtlle. Oor....
e e e Got. Posey LUced Jsffersonvtlle. Oor. Posey did not like Corydon as a place of residence. On December ST, 1812, bo sent a communication to tha legialatire council stating that be bad gone to JeffersonvUle. where be could ba near bis physician.- physician.- who lived in Louisville. Louisville. He added that if tha Legislature bad any business with him it could be sent on to the former city. Thla communication communication evidently did not please tha Legislature, for on January C, 1814, a preamble and resolution was adopted criticising Gov. Posey for leaving the seat of government The resolution in part reads: "Whereas, tha expense of near 250 a day doth arise to the people of the territory by reason of the Legislature Legislature being kept in session, all of which evil and Inconvenience doth arise from the Governor leering the seat of gor-ernment gor-ernment gor-ernment and gofng to JeffersonvlUe,w etc.. it was resolved to adjourn sine die. that the people might not be put to the extraordinary expense of 834 a day by the members remaining at Corydon. Corydon. It costs 21.000 a day now to run the Legislature at Indianapolis, and ths members-elect, members-elect, members-elect, aa a rule, prefer to stay in session 100 days. Gor. Posey did not get offended at the Legislature and resign. He remained remained In office until November 7. 1818. Most of the time he lived In a "mansion" at Jeffersonvtfle, which is shown . here. This oM-faahloned oM-faahloned oM-faahloned house stood until about 1838. There waa much Interesting romance connected with the life of Gov. Posey. When he ran for Governor in 1818 he waa defeated by Jonathan Jennings. Jennings. The people had forgotten his services In the Revolution, as they tor-got tor-got tor-got the illustrious William Henry Harrison Harrison when his grandson ran for Governor Governor of the State In 1878 against Blue Jeanfl Williams. He died In Shawnee-town, Shawnee-town, Shawnee-town, I1L. in 1818, where be was serving as Indian agent e e e
