Pure water demand despite no approved plan - No P e Endorsed Which Does include This...
No P e Endorsed Which Does include This Provision. There is talk now of postponing ntil next February the submission p the voters of Harrisburg of the uestion of increasing - the debt of the lity for the purpose of making need - d city improvements. J here must e no delay - An interesting - and harming communication was '' pub - shed in the "Telegraph" on Satin - ay describing - the typhoid condi ions of this city as compared with hiladelphia and X.ew ork. It was lamentable showing for llarrisburg iasmuch as figures were presented hich indicated a worse state of af - iirs than raanjr citizens had reason believe. Ihis paper has consistent - it ly supported every movement oking to the purification of the ater supply of llarrisburg - and will ntinue to do so. Ihis subject Is ore important than any other nder consideration' by the experts bw at work in the interest of pro - sed imporvements. So far as the Pelegraph" is concerned i't. will bt, tisfied with no report which does t advocate immediate considera - ;n of this question. Sewers are eded, as are parks and paved reets, but all these are less impor - nt than pure water. Many of the loughtful citizens of llarrisburg are f 4 j IPURE WATER! an for City Improvements Wi! Not of the opinion 'that the wfer works should have beeh removed long ago to a point in the neighborhood of Rockville, where a gravity reservoir should be located on the mountain and the water' conducted to the present city reservoir by a system of pipes. Water for New York city is conducted many miles , and it is not necessary for a ci'ty the size of Har - risburg to submit to an old system because it is old. We have had no hint of what the expert at work on the question of our waiter supply will report, but it is certain that the people will not be satisfied with anything less than' a purification of the present water supply. We want a better sewer system and paved streets and parks and everything else that a growing city should have, bwll we first want pure water and plenty of it. There is no occasion for delay. The whole subject should be submitted to the voters at the November election, when all these questions can be taken up free of contention over local candidates for olfrice. Thousands of the people of Harrisburg are not able to purchase expensive filters and the city owes it 'to all classes to furnish water that is pure and free from disease -
