Shooting at Jesse nash's Store
PUTNAM COUNTY KILLING I.. E. HICKEY SHOT AT BURTON BY SAM DYER. Died Instantly With a Bullet in His Breast Slayer Caught and Landed in Jail. Special Dispatch to The American. COOKEV1LLE, Tenn., Dec. 7. Another Another killing, the third in this county In three weeks, occurred at Burton, fifteen miles southwest of this place, yesterday evening, when Sam Dyer, of Bozarth, DeKalb County, shot and Instantly Instantly killed I. E. Hickey. A crowd of five or six men, all drinking, drinking, had gathered at Jesse Nash's store and were amusing themselves slapping each other on tho back, etc. Dyer In some way got offended. He went around the corner of the store and presently came out with a pistol in his hand, at the same time exclaiming: "I am going to kill the whole d d lot of you." With this remark he began shooting, directing his first shot at George Bussell, who happened to be the nearest to. him. The bullet took effect in Bussell's right arm just below the elbow and came out near the shouldej. He was preparing to try another shot at Bussell when the latter ran around the store and out of sight. Dyer's second second shot was directed at Hickey. It missed its mark, but was followed by another which took effect in the left breast about one-half one-half one-half inch above the heart, killing him almost Instantly. The remainder of the crowd scattered in every direction. After the shooting Dyer, with two friends, went 'to the home of Gube Tucker, where he was arrested that night by Deputies Bud Judd and Byrd Davis of this place. When the officers .were admitted Dyer was in bed, but had not been asleep. He and his three friends were heavily armed, having gone to bed with shell belts buckled on. Whether they intended to resist arrest arrest or feared mob violence is not known. No attempt was made to resist resist the officers, and he was brought to Cookeville this morning and placed in jail. He will be tried Wednesday afternoon before Esquire J. K. Douglass. Douglass. Dyer i3 about twenty years of -age -age and is a farmer; Bussell. who was shot In the arm, is about twenty-one twenty-one twenty-one years Old and is employed in a saw-mil) saw-mil) saw-mil) at that place, Hickey was a farmer. None of the men have ever been in serious trouble before. Dyer made this statement statement this morning to Deputy Sheriff Bud Judd: "It Is easy to get Into serious trouble when you associate with bad company;"
