U-M U-M U-M coach held that line for rock stars By JOE LAP0INTE : Free Press Sports Writer Much ado was made about little a few years ago when Tiger catcher Lance Parrish worked part of one off-season off-season off-season as a bodyguard for pop singer Tina Turner. Another Michigan sports figure has a more extensive background as a rock 'n' roll security man. He is Jerry Meter, 25, Michigan's defensive line coach and former co-captain co-captain co-captain of the 1978 Wolverines Big Ten championship team. Between his playing and coaching careers, the 6-foot-2, 6-foot-2, 6-foot-2, 6-foot-2, 6-foot-2, 210-pound 210-pound 210-pound Meter worked the security detail for several major rock concerts, including the Rolling Stones' 1978 show at Detroit's Masonic Temple. "You gonna write about this?" a surprised Meter asked a sports writer who noticed Meter's burly physique in the background of a Stones picture from that concert. "Hey, my job's on the line. I'm not sure if Bo (Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler) ever knew about this." So Bo knows, Meter was one of several Wolverines who worked to keep law and order at concerts featuring the Stones, Rod Stewart, Jethro Tull and others. Meter remem-; remem-; remem-; bers the Stones show as "awfully loud, but enjoyable." "We got paid $20 and a chance to hear a concert," Meter, said. "The crowd was pretty good." The former inside linebacker is in his fourth season on Schembechler's staff. He was named defensive line coach in 1980 after two years as a graduate assistant. He was a second team All-Big All-Big All-Big Ten linebacker in his senior year. Meter won the 1977 Matthaei Award, which goes to the junior who excels on the athletic field and in the classroom." He made the dean's list in 1975. -
