Prison Farm Guard , Dies of Heart Attack Vandalia (Staff) Charles . Franklin Smith, 71, guard at the Illinois State Penal farm, died Friday night of a heart attack while on duty. His body was found by Guard Capt. Vance McCormick when he investigated Mr: Smith's failure to make his 10:30 p. m. call. Mr. .Smith had suffered a heart attack Dec. 5 and was on his first shift back at work when he was stricken. He was well known throughout the Central Illinois area, having been a former road and bridge builder and general contractor. He and Mrs. Smith recently cele brated their fiftieth wedding anniversary. anniversary. He was a member of the Odd Fellows and a former member member of the Decatur lodge of B. P. O. E. , Besides his wife Susan, he leaves the following children, Mrs. William William Busenhart, Vandalia; Mrs. John Richardson of Burbank, Calif.;' Mrs. O. T. Ketchan, Washington, Washington, D. C; Mrs. Lee McLaughlin, McLaughlin, Wood River, 111.; Mrs. James Powell,' Altamont; Mrs. R. E. Rule, St Louis; and Dennis of Los Angeles. Calif., and e brother Harvey of Farmington, Minn. Funeral services will be held at 3 p. m. Tuesday in the First Baptist Baptist church, burial in South Hill cemetery. The body will be at the Gets Permit to Raze Old Church Building Rev. Howad J. Beecher, 2441 East Eldorado street, obtained a permit yesterday from William C. Spent, city building inspector, to demolish an old church building at 2402 East Prairie avenue.
